Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb penne pasta Cook according to package instructions
  • 1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage Can substitute with turkey for a leaner option
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes Use canned for convenience
  • 6 oz tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp salt Adjust to taste
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper Adjust to taste
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese For topping
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese For topping

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Cook the penne pasta according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  • In a large skillet, brown the ground beef or Italian sausage over medium heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, and sauté until the onion is translucent.
  • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper. Simmer the sauce for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • In a large baking dish, layer half of the cooked penne pasta, followed by half of the meat sauce, and top with half of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used up, ending with the cheese on top.
  • Bake the casserole for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
